ABOUT WATER DREAMING:
Water is central to life to Aboriginal people and the 'Water Dreaming' artwork represents river beds, clouds and soakages (source of water in Australian deserts).
In traditional iconography short dashes are often used to represent 'mangkurdu' (cumulus & stratocumulus clouds), and longer flowing lines represent 'ngawarra' (flood waters). Small circles are used to depict 'mulju' (soakages) and river bed.
For Aboriginal people living a traditional life in the desert areas of Australia, knowledge of where water could be found was essential to survival. Therefore, all water sources form a vital part of traditional knowledge and ritual life.
